Juvenile Intake Assessment Services
PURPOSE: JIAS provides assistance to all Law Enforcement Agencies in Cherokee County who are dealing with Children in Need of Care (CINC) and Juvenile Offenders (JO).
PROCEDURE: Juvenile Intake Officers complete an assessment on each youth and provide the family with referrals for community services, as appropriate. The assessment is used to identify problems in the child’s life that may not be evident by their contact with the Law Enforcement Officer. When placement out of the home is necessary (considering the safety of the child and community) a recommendation for appropriate placement is made to the law enforcement officer. The JIAS officer contacts child placing agencies and secures a placement.
FEES: There is no fee for this service. The Juvenile Justice Authority provides a grant for each Judicial District in the State of Kansas to fund this service.
ACCESS/REFERRAL: When a youth comes in contact with law enforcement, CINC or JO, Juvenile Intake is called to help with the assessment of the youth, age birth to 17. Parents may request a complimentary assessment to determine any community resources that may assist the youth. The program is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
